What’s the best sitting position for a pain free spine.

What’s the best sitting position.

One of the most common questions I get asked in the Chiropractic office is “what’s the best sitting position”.

The common myth is that we need to be upright, shoulders back, neck tucked in and spine nice and straight as opposed to the classic slouching position with rounded shoulders, jutting neck and curved spine.

Whilst if I had to pick one of the two described I would definitely pick the first, it would still be difficult to remain in that position all day.

This is because when we hold positions for long periods of time our spines will become tired and cause other muscles to compensate leading to pain and dysfunction.

At JS Chiropractic, we teach and educate our patients the importance to constantly move our spine in to different postures and positions. This will decrease the risk of low back pain and neck pain as we aren’t constantly stressing and straining different areas of our spine for long periods of time.

We can change our sitting position by altering to heights of our desk chair, our desk or our laptop. We can even remind ourselves each hour to change the position of our legs, our back and our neck, creating a spine that is more mobile and less likely to be painful during the working day.

Stay tuned for next weeks blog where we debate the costs vs the benefits of a standing desk vs a sitting desk.
