Standing Desks, worth the hype?

Standing desks, worth the hype?.

Happy Wednesday Chandlers Ford and Eastleigh, Today I wanted to write about standing desks and whether they are a worthwhile investment at reducing back pain and improving spinal function.

A standing desk does what it says on the tin, It’s a desk but instead of sitting, the desk as higher making us stand. These desks can either be static or mobile meaning the heigh can be adjusted to different levels dependant on the height of the person.

Here are three reasons that standing desks can be a great addition to help improve your posture and reduce your back pain.

1.       Forces a change of scenery for your spine- Most of our day is often centred around sitting, even at home whether its eating at the table or watching TV on the sofa. By having a standing desk this positively changes our spinal habits to a new posture and position that’s allows stress and strain to be taken off our neck, mid and lower back

2.       Allows for a better neck posture- When sitting, we often have our monitor lower than our eyeline forcing us to slouch and crane our neck forward and down to see the screen easier

With standing desks, it is more common that the monitor is level with our eyeline taking strain off our spine reducing the risk of neck and shoulder pain.

3.       Allows for more movement during the day- When we sit down, we are far less likely to get up and move around, often subconsciously delaying tasks because we are engrossed in our work and the concept of sitting to standing some like “a waste of time”. When standing, we are immediately more mobile being able to move from A-B far quicker meaning we are more likely to be active during the day being a benefit to our long term spinal health.

To Answer the question in the title, yes I do believe spinal desks are worth “the hype” and the investment if we are in jobs that require lots of sitting as they give us the ability to be more active and mobile thus promoting a healthy spine free of pain during the working day.
