Why does my pain keep moving around?

Why does my pain keep moving around?

When our patients attend our Chandlers Ford office, they often have a central pain in a particular area. Sometimes, as we begin to improve the pain in said area, they mention pain happening in other areas too that they haven’t noticed before.

This can be explained by the Gate Control Theory of Pain.

This is the concept that pain signals are sent between the painful sight and the brain through the central spinal cord. The spinal cord can be described as “the gate” where the signals are either let through or restricted. AKA the pain gate is open or closed.

When the pain gate is open, the body will perceive the pain in that part of the body such as the original pain the patient presents with

When the gate is closed, the body wont perceive the pain so even through a problem is present the patient wont notice any pain in that area.

The next factor to consider is the body can only deal with so much pain and information which is why the body will focus more resources and “open” the gate to the area thought to be worse. As the body begins to heal and improve, the body has more resources so other pain gates may open suggesting a reason why other pains can come to light, particularly in the treatment of chronic pains.

I hope this gives an explanation in to why your pain might be always changing and moving around. Remember to consult with a Chiropractor or other medical professional to gain an further understanding and establish methods to help reduce your pain and improve your function.
