Chiropractic vs Osteopathy
The most common question I get asked in the office during a session is “what is the difference between a Chiropractor and an Osteopath”
We are very fortunate in the Chandlers Ford, Eastleigh and greater Southampton and Winchester areas to be blessed with so amazing Chiropractors and Osteopaths that treat anything from lower back pain to helping manage more chronic conditions too.
So what is the difference between both professions?
Both professions both focus on treating the body extrinsically and holistically meaning they don’t use drugs or surgery but non invasive techniques to help promote positive change.
Chiropractic typically focuses on the spine and the nervous system compared to Osteopaths who traditionally look in to blood, lymphatic drainage and organ systems.
Additionally from observation, Chiropractic treatments focus on the concept of an adjustment, a High velocity low amplitude thrust in to the joint to improve mobility and restore balance to the spine and body. I have seen Osteopaths use similar techniques however not as often, instead using gentle mobilisations of the joints to help assist joint movement.
Both professions promote an active lifestyle and typically will provide exercise, lifestyle and rehabilitation advice for their patients.
As Chiropractic stemmed from Osteopathy, it is logical for there to be many similarities.
Essentially, nowadays it can be difficult to determine which profession you’re seeing. What’s more Important is that they help you with your healthcare goals and you feel comfortable in their care.
