Can I exercise after my adjustments?

This is a question I often get asked a lot in the office. Most clients coming in to the clinic have a desire to continue to exercise and train during either straight after their treatments or between sessions.

Firstly the answer all depends on the diagnosis from the Chiropractor. If the patient is in acute pain and is struggling to be active and mobile then more intense exercise isn’t going to be the best way forward to ensure a full and active recovery.

However little twinges or niggles shouldn’t be seen as a reason not to exercise. The Chiropractor will educate and inform the patient the types of exercises that are safe to perform without aggravating the patients problem.

For example a patient with a biceps tendon problem should probably avoid heavy chest and shoulder movements in the gym with any movements involving arm flexion. However they can happily train lower body exercises and cardiovascular work as that is less Likely to stress/aggravate the area.

For the majority of patients that attend the office, we actively promote exercise after the adjustments. This is because be continuing to be moving and active we are promoting the positive movement patterns created in the appointment. By moving we are helping build a new muscle memory for the body that over time will be adopted allowing a reduction in pain and improvement in function.

This is why at JS Chiropractic we always promote 10-15 minutes of movement after your appointment to reinforce the positive work we have done on the body during the appointment.

A failure to do this can risk the body taking longer to heal due to the movement patterns taking longer to be adopted from short term to long term memory.

In conclusion, exercise after adjustments are heavily promoted here in the clinic, unless there is a specific diagnosis from your Chiropractor where exercising will limit and slow your recovery process.
