The Negative Effects of Sitting on our Spines.
Negative effects of Sitting on our Spines.
One of the primary reasons people attend our Chandlers Ford office is their Back pain can be traced back to too much sitting.
Usually, this is work related with most jobs involving desks, office chairs and computers. Even though ergonomic technology has improved, staying in these positions for too long can be detrimental to our spinal health and wellbeing.
Have a watch of our latest video where Joel explains to negative effects of prolonged postures via the water bottle analogy.
If we hold our water bottle (a light object) out in front of us for a minute or so, we are very unlikely to feel any pain or problem.
If we continue to hold the water bottle out in-front for longer, this might cause our arm to shake and twinge.
Holding out the water bottle for hours will likely lead to pain, stiffness and a dead feeling in the arm with the person often struggling to hold it for that length of time.
This same principle applies to our spine, if we stay in one position for too long it will cause more stress and pressure to be applied to the joints in our neck, mid and lower back.
Our spines can only cope with those loads for so long, if we are in the same posture/position for too long it will cause more strain on the body leading to pain and stiffness.
This is why studies have shown getting up from your desk for just 2 minutes every hour can be beneficial in reducing back pain as we are giving those joints muscles and ligaments “a break” from the increased loads being placed upon it.
