The importance of a stable lower back and spine.

Instability is one of the main causes and contributors to lower back pain and one we often see in our Chandlers Ford office.

The inability to keep our spine stable under load/pressure can cause stress and strain on our muscles, joints and ligaments. When this happens for too long, our body wont be able to cope creating pain and inflammation.

It is often described as a dull achy pain which can be sharp on sudden unguarded movements such as twisting or turning.

When a Chiropractor or healthcare professional diagnoses an instability, the first actions is to ensure the nerve supply to the area is working at its best. This is helped through techniques such as spinal adjustments, soft tissue therapy and acupuncture.

Then to help continue to stabilise the area, exercise and rehab is needed strengthen and activate the small ligaments and muscles that support our spine. This can be achieved through a loaded programme of weight training, home exercises or a combination of both.

By improving our stability, it will not only reduce or levels of lower back pain but help improve our function and quality of life with our spine being robust enough to deal with day to day or heavy load tasks such as lifting a suitcase or as simple as leaning over to pick something up that would have previously caused low back pain.
